A trifle long

I was so looking forward to reading this book but sadly found way too many lengthy and irrelevant details. None of the characters were developed enough. The plot was interesting.

Fibz27

Splendid

Wonderfully up front whilst twisting enough to keep you surprised. Well rounded and entertaining characters.

Thursday murder club

Unbelievably excellent. In the top 3 of the best books I have read!

Pamclare

Loved this book

A group of likeable characters waltzed around a nicely paced narrative. This book had me laughing out loud - something I rarely do. The interactions between the main characters were delightful and the plot had unexpected twists and turns that led to a most satisfying conclusion.

Tygc21

Fabulous, funny and kept me guessing

A wonderful uplifting murder mystery... I loved it, the characters, the drinking, the guessing, the love, the loyalty, the wisdom and the compassion. A great read. Really looking forward to the number 2

Awful, slow and without any fun that the title implies

Speed read this one, it will be more tolerable!

3.5 stars Author English comedian, television presenter, producer, and director. Born in Billericay, Essex. Technically, that makes him Billericay Dickie, which was the name of a song by Ian Dury that appeared on his debut album New Boots and Panties!! in 1977. Given that Mr Osman would have been seven at the time, it is safe to presume he was not the bricklayer and first person narrator of that song, which starts: "I had a love affair with Nina In the back of my Cortina A seasoned up hyena could not have been more obscener" But I digress. Mr O, who is best known as creator and co-presenter of the BBC One television quiz Pointless, has appeared on a wide variety of British panel shows, and published non-fiction titles based on his TV shows. This is his first novel. Plot Four residents of an upmarket retirement village in Kent meet up each week (on Thursdays surprise, surprise) and try to solve cold cases provided by one of their number, a female ex-detective inspector of police. Then someone associated with the village gets killed IRL, then another, then another. Investigation reveals connections to nefarious underworld activities, and deaths, in the past. Present day coppers go along for the ride. Resolution is achieved amid amusing asides involving sundry old folk. Narrative Third person from various POVs alternating, and drawn together with diary entries by Joyce, a returned nurse and freshman TMC member. Characters TMC members also include a former spy, a former trade union official with a national profile, and a retired psychiatrist. The aforementioned Joyce is called into service after the police detective suffers a nasty stroke that requires transfer to the attached nursing home. There's a solid supporting cast of villains and feisty elderly. Prose Quintessentially droll English style updated artfully for the present day by Mr Osman. In the best Christie tradition, the gruesome stuff occurs off stage so as not to upset the sensibilities of characters, or readers. Mr O manages to stay on the right side of twee in the main. Bottom line Well executed and entertaining enough, if not really my cup of tea. Fans of Midsomer Murders and the like will probably love this so much that they'll want to marry it and have babies. They're in luck. Thursday Murder Club Book 2 is rattling down the pipes as we speak.
